Healthy Beauty from within
Part 1 – Collagen for Health and Wellness
Eat your way to health & beauty
Healthy and young-looking skin is a universal building block of beauty, and the indicator of young skin is smooth, moist and elastic skin. Most people maintain their skin by using skincare products – people nourish their skin from the outside. However, one driving factor of young skin is collagen, the protein network in the middle skin layer which is responsible for the skin’s elasticity and hydration.
Collagen can break down from many factors such as pollution, UV, smoking, stress and also ageing. These factors make the collagen network thin out, causing the skin to appear wrinkly and inelastic. Currently, the collagen contained in food cannot be used directly in skin tissues. This collagen is made up of a long chain of amino acids that must be first broken down into a shorter form. Collagen supplements make use of hydrolysis to convert the collagen into shorter chains which are more easily used by tissue. Let’s take a deep dive into collagen and learn more!
Part 1: Collagen
Collagen is one of the most widely used ingredients in various products such as supplements for joint and bone health, nutricosmetics, and even sports nutrition products. Although the collagen trend has been around for a long time, it is becoming increasingly popular and making its presence known.
Different types of collagen
Did you know that collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, found in bones, muscles, skin, and tendons? There are different types of collagen, but 80 to 90 percent of collagen belongs to types 1,2, and 3. Type 1, 2, and 3 are usually used for supplements. These types of collagen are all animal-based, from cows, chickens, or fish, and the diferent types of collagen have a variety of benefits and functions. Let us have a closer look.
Type 1 Collagen
Collagen type 1 is the strongest form of collagen. It occurs in ligaments, tendons, bones, dermis, etc. Supplements usually use type 1 from marine collagen as the main source. Moreover, collagen type 1 helps the wound healing process as it stimulates new tissue growth. Collagen type 1 also strengthens nails and hair and improves skin elasticity.
Type 2 Collagen
Generally, 90% of collagen type 2 is found in articular and hyaline cartilages. The main role is to support joint health because this type of collagen forms a fibrillary network, which provides tensile strength to the tissue. Thus, it is good for arthritis as it builds collagen in cartilage. Cartilages naturally protect joint bone. Furthermore, the organic bone broth protein is the main source of this type.
Type 3 Collagen
Collagen type 3 occurs in hollow organs including large blood vessels, the bowel, and the uterus. Collagen type 3 mainly occurs along with collagen type 1 so collagen supplements for skin usually include type 1 and type 2 to increase skin hydration and skin suppleness while decreasing furrows and wrinkles.
